Introduction
Digital transformation has been adopted in many industries and the engineering industry is no exception. Engineering projects often involve numerous people or parties, and that it is vital to allow effective communication to avoid any errors. In particular, utilising digital technologies enhance and smoothen the overall operational processes. Therefore, this article will discuss four case studies in order to examine how digital transformation can be adopted in the engineering industry.
Elevator maintenance e-form app
We have developed a mobile application and a backend system that store all maintenance information for Kone Elevator, allowing staff members to record, transfer, and search for relevant details easily. Before undergoing digital transformation, the process of assessing elevators was all paper-based and time-consuming, as workers had to walk to numerous locations in order to review different elevators and that they had to record all information by hand. Yet, the mobile application, which is connected to the company’s database, allows onsite workers to input information, making it easier for internal staffs when doing audits. This example highlights that executing digital transformation in the engineering industry increases staff efficiency, as the mobile application enables the search function with real-time update. It also minimizes the possibility of human error and data loss.
NFC attendance check-in app
Apart from the elevator maintenance app, we have also took advantage of Kone Elevator’s existing Near Field Communication (NFC) resources to build an attendance check-in app to better manage and keep track of their staffs in terms of attendance, maintenance time, work hours, and more. All check-in, check-out, and any timed procedures were recorded on paper-based documents for review, which raised a question of accuracy. As a result, this check-in application enables higher productivity, as management staffs are able to have full visibility on staff performances and attendance and so, resources can be better allocated and organized.

Knowledge training system
Furthermore, we have provided Kone Elevator with digital solutions to its existing employee training system by developing a mobile application to manage the training of their maintenance workers. The company already has a mobile app that communicates and updates information from their database via Internet. However, we have developed an additional system that integrates with the existing app to display and hold educational courses on elevator management. Hence, staffs can now effortlessly update and access all current best practices relating to elevator maintenance and management. This also allows the company to efficiently train and keep their staffs up-to-date on Continuing Professional Development (CPD) on lift/elevator management, improving operational productivity and reducing errors in elevator maintenance work.

HRM
We have established a customised Human Resource Management (HRM) system that comprises of employee management, time attendance, roster planning, and payroll modules to better manage labour cost and enhance operational efficiency for Triple Faith. For instance, all employee profiles were paper-based, which was time-consuming to search for a specific employee’s information. With the HRM system, staff members can easily access and find information about a particular employee, which is more time-efficient and user-friendly. Time attendance has become more accurate as staffs can check-in and check-out on their mobile devices through the QR code built in the HRM. This leads to a more accurate and precise payroll calculation as this process can be automated. Hence, this case study demonstrates that a HRM system improves the overall operational efficiency of a large-scale company.
Conclusion
Digital transformation plays an important role in the engineering industry, as it improves productivity and reduces errors. The four case studies discussed above clearly provide an insight of how digital transformation can be adopted in the engineering industry.
